This is the first of seven Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mysteries. In it, we are introduced to professional genealogist, Jefferson Tayte, who is working with a demanding client to solve a family mystery stemming from the early 19th century. Tayte has hit a brick wall and the client (we presume he is wealthy) requires Tayte to fly from the U.S. to England, to skunk out more clues in the Devon region. Tayte is terrified of flying, but white-knuckles it there and is just nicely settling in when he is attacked and nearly killed near the old family estate. Things quickly ramp up with a murder, kidnapping, more near-misses for Tayte and even a bit of a love story. I was skeptical about how Robinson was going to credibly develop a scenario where so much mayhem would occur in the present day beause of something that happened in the early 1800's, but he pulled it off. The book kept my interest throughout with lots of twists and turns, intense situations and a satisfying ending. The book isn't perfect. For example, there is one sad murder, that frankly, I think Tayte shrugged off a bit too easily. Also, I questioned Tayte's response to several situations and how he dealt with some people he encountered. I like it enough to download the second book to my Kindle and I hope that Robinson continues to define Tayte's personality.
